The Bold Heart-Piercer is one of the most decisive attacking patterns in xiangqi. It ignores material bookkeeping and spends a whole chariot to remove the pillar of the palace — the centre advisor — opening the door for the follow-up mate.

1. What it is

"Piercing the heart" means capturing the advisor in the exact centre of the opponent's palace. The move is usually a sacrifice: a chariot for an advisor looks like a loss, but what it buys is the collapse of the whole defensive structure.

2. When it works

It is not a move you can play at any moment. The conditions are:

  1. The opponent's advisors and elephants are incomplete or badly placed, so the centre advisor can be taken;
  2. You still have pieces to continue the attack, such as another chariot, a cannon or a soldier;
  3. The opponent's general is badly placed and cannot dodge the follow-up by moving;
  4. Time is short — the position does not allow slow manoeuvring; this is usually a one-shot investment.

Sacrificing a chariot for an advisor with nothing to follow up is a plain loss.

3. The standard sequence

  1. Red's chariot captures Black's centre advisor along the central or rib file;
  2. If Black recaptures with the general or an advisor, a gap appears in the palace at once;
  3. Red checks with a cannon through the gap, or brings the other chariot in from the flank;
  4. Black's general has nowhere to hide and the mate lands.

The core logic: trade material for space, then trade space for the win.

4. Assessing the risk

  • Count whether the chariot can be taken: if Black can capture it and still hold, the sacrifice is wasted;
  • Make sure a mate exists: ideally you can see a clear mate within 3-5 moves;
  • Watch the counterattack: after sacrificing, your own back rank is thin — do not let the opponent strike first;
  • Do not use it casually in the middlegame: it belongs to endgames or positions where the defence is already cracked.

5. How to practise

Set up "chariot and cannon against full advisors and elephants" in single-player mode. Try the ordinary attacking plan first, then the heart-piercer, and compare which is faster. Also record the cases where it failed, so you learn when not to play it.
