The crouching horse is one of the most aggressive mates in Chinese chess. Once a horse reaches the vital square at the side of the palace, mate is usually close.
1. What it is
The crouching horse lands on the vital square at the flank of the enemy palace, right next to the general. That square has three properties:
- it is very close, so the defender has almost no time to react;
- it controls several key squares at once, restricting where the general can go;
- it combines easily with long-range threats from chariot and cannon.
2. The mating structure
It rarely mates alone; typical partners:
- chariot — controls the rib file or a line, cutting off the general's retreat;
- cannon — pins from a distance and restricts the advisors;
- soldier — in the endgame, closes the general's last exit.
The usual pattern: the horse checks from the crouching square, the chariot and cannon close the doors, and the general runs out of squares.
3. A typical sequence
- The red horse jumps into the crouching square with check;
- The black general must move to one side, because the other side is controlled;
- The red chariot checks down the rib file, or the cannon seals the last square;
- The general has nowhere to go — mate.
The key: the horse forces the general, the chariot and cannon finish.
4. How to defend
- Control the approach — place pieces near the crouching square so the horse cannot land there;
- Block the horse leg — put a piece on its route and the jump is impossible;
- Move the general to a side away from the crouching square in advance;
- Trade the horse — it is the only key piece, so exchanging it removes the threat.
5. Why it matters
The crouching horse can appear as early as the opening and is a regular visitor in the middlegame and endgame. It belongs to the same family as the cannon-behind-horse mate, but it emphasises going deep into the palace, which makes the threat more direct.
How to practise: set up horse and chariot against a lone general and drill the order — crouching check first, chariot closes the door second. Then add advisors for the defender and work out how to use the cannon to stop them reinforcing.
