The Elephant Opening is the classic steady first move for Red. Instead of planting a cannon on the centre file and pressing immediately, Red flies an elephant to the centre, reinforces the position, and looks for chances from a sound structure.

1. The idea

The first move is Elephant 3 to 5 (or Elephant 7 to 5). It looks quiet, but it:

  • reinforces the centre, so the opponent's central cannon cannot win anything quickly;
  • keeps every option open — Red can later switch to the centre cannon, a horse opening or a soldier push;
  • leaves clean routes for the horses and chariots to develop.

In one line: avoid losing first, then look to win.

2. Black's common replies

Against the Elephant Opening Black usually chooses:

  • Central Cannon — press immediately and test Red's central defence;
  • Horse out — match structures and turn the game into a positional battle;
  • Pawn push — probe where Red intends to develop;
  • Elephant to the centre — mirror the move for a very balanced position.

Each reply leads to a completely different middlegame, which is exactly the appeal of the opening.

3. How the middlegame unfolds

Three typical routes:

  1. Switch to the centre cannon — at the right moment play a cannon to the centre file and build a central attack;
  2. Both wings — occupy two open files with the chariots and squeeze the opponent's space;
  3. Gradual build-up — push a soldier to free a horse, then combine horse and cannon to find a breakthrough.

The point throughout is coordination: neither reckless nor passive.

4. Practical points

  • Solid does not mean slow. Get the major pieces out just as quickly as in any other opening.
  • Keep the elephants connected so they protect each other and cannot be exploited by cannon or horse.
  • Switch to attack at the right moment — do not stay defensive for the whole game.
  • Avoid needless trades. The fewer pieces on the board, the less a solid structure is worth.

The Elephant Opening is excellent training for positional judgement. Play it consistently against the AI and get a feel for the rhythm of "solid, then advancing".
